SAMBA DRUMS AND FUNDRAISERS

The Magic of Music has recently added Samba drumming to the programme. Through a charity fundraiser in The Laughter Lounge, we raised EUR1500 towards the cost of the drums. Many thanks to the Laughter Lounge for giving us the opportunity to run this event and thanks to all the schools and our friends and family who supported either by way of a donation or by coming on the night.

The next fundraiser will be in 'The Clubhouse Hotel' in Kilkenny on Friday 4th June. It'll be EUR25 for a table of 5 and this will include nibbles and live music all night. The Magic of Music was delighted to be able to give the children involved with the programme the opportunity to sing in the National Concert Hall on the 20th and 21st June 2010. The programme was a musical journey around the world including the songs, dancing and rhythms that the children have learnt during their class time with the Magic of Music. The St. Anne's N.S. choir from Rathkeale perform a couple of songs on their own on the Sunday evening while St. John of Gods Special school choir and Our Lady of Victories BNS brass band will both perform solo on the Monday night. There was a special guest appearance from none other than Don Baker on Monday night.

ONE CITY ONE BOOK

2010 is the fifth year of the Dublin: One City, One Book project, designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year. The project promotes reading in a city which boasts one of the world's greatest literary heritages including four Nobel Laureates and is a major element of Dublin's submission to become a UNESCO City of Literature. This year the city is being asked to read Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray. The Magic of Music are supporting this initiative by bringing one of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales, 'The Selfish Giant' to life in their classrooms all around Dublin city. Children are reading the book and then composing music using soundbeams and percussion instruments to accompany the main story line. We hope all schools involved enjoy the next couple of weeks and we welcome representatives from Dublin City Council Libraries in to view the lessons.
